Texas Forestry Associaiton – Lufkin / East Texas (Full-Time, On-Site/Travel)
Texas Forestry Association (TFA) is seeking a creative, organized Communications Coordinator to help tell the story of Texas’ working forests and the people who care for them.
TFA represents forest landowners, loggers, foresters, mills, and service providers stewarding roughly 12.1 million acres of commercial timberland in East Texas, where tens of millions of trees are planted each year to support clean water, wildlife habitat, rural jobs, and a strong forest economy.
Reporting to the Executive Director, this position will lead day-to-day communications across social media, website, print, and member outreach—supporting TFA’s advocacy, education, and membership programs.
Digital & Social Media (Daily/Weekly)
- Plan, create, and schedule engaging content for TFA’s social media channels (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and others as appropriate).
- Cover TFA events in real time (Forestry Day at the Capitol, Annual Conference, Texas Logging Council activities, field tours, etc.) through posts, photos, and short videos, etc.
- Monitor engagement, respond to messages/comments, and track basic analytics to grow reach and improve performance.
- Maintain and update the TFA website (news, events, resources, policy updates, publications, and membership information).
- Post timely updates on legislative issues, regulatory alerts, and key association announcements.
- Coordinate and design TFA e-newsletters (member updates, action alerts, event promotions) using an email platform such as Constant Contact, or similar.
- Ensure content is accurate, well-written, and aligned with TFA’s mission and brand.
Magazine & Print Publications
- Serve as the primary coordinator for TFA’s bi-monthly magazine, Texas Forestry, (planning, content calendar, deadlines, and layout coordination).
- Work with staff, members, and partners to generate story ideas and secure articles, photos, and advertisements.
- Write, edit, and proofread feature stories, member spotlights, legislative updates, program highlights, and technical/education pieces.
- Coordinate with graphic designers and printers to meet production schedules and mailing deadlines.
- Assist with Texas Logging Council’s quarterly magazine, Texas Logger, brochures, one-pagers, programs, and signage for conferences, tours, special campaigns, etc.
- Draft press releases, media advisories, and op-eds highlighting TFA initiatives, forestry impacts, and policy issues.
- Help translate complex forestry and water policy topics into clear, compelling language for landowners, legislators, and the public.
- Maintain media contact lists; pitch stories to local and state outlets as needed.
- Ensure consistent use of TFA branding across all communications (logo, fonts, tone, and messaging).
- Support membership campaigns and events with clear, attractive promotional materials.
- Highlight member success stories, award winners, and council activities (Texas Logging Council, Texas Forest Landowners Council, Texas Accredited Foresters Council, etc.).
- Be the lead liaison for the Communications Committee who will assist with strategic initiatives, campaigns, and articles.
- Work closely with TFA staff and volunteer leaders to anticipate communication needs for events, programs, and policy efforts.
- Provide basic event photography and short-form video content where feasible.
- Track key communications metrics (email open rates, web traffic, social engagement) and provide simple quarterly reports.
- Heavy assist with Annual Conference, regional membership meetings, and Board of Directors meetings, etc.
Personal Attributes
- Relationship-oriented communicator who enjoys working with landowners, loggers, foresters, mills, and partner organizations.
- Comfortable in both professional settings (Capitol visits, board meetings) and field settings (mill tours, logging sites, landowner field days).
- Self-starter with a service mindset who can take direction but also bring new ideas to the table.
- Being a team player for a small office team who is highly productive and cross functional.
- Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Communications, Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field preferred.
- 5+ years of experience in a communications, marketing, or public affairs role—experience with agriculture, forestry, natural resources, or rural advocacy is a strong plus.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong writing and editing skills; able to shift tone for landowners, policymakers, media, and the general public.
- Driving required in personal, dependable transportation.
- Demonstrated experience managing organizational social media accounts and using scheduling/analytics tools.
- Comfortable updating websites using a CMS (e.g., WordPress or similar platform).
- Basic graphic design/layout skills (Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar) for social graphics and simple print pieces.
- Highly organized, deadline-driven, and able to manage multiple projects at once (magazine production, events, day-to-day content).
- Curiosity about forestry, conservation, rural communities, and Texas policy—and a willingness to learn the language of the forest sector.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary: Competitive and commensurate with experience; anticipated range mid-$40,000s to mid-$70,000s annually, informed by similar communications roles at comparable organizations.
